Yakuza 0

I’d never played a Yakuza game before this one, much to the dismay of certain friends. While it’s definitely a daunting franchise to enter into, Yakuza 0 is simultaneously the best and worst starting point for newcomers like myself. It has the challenging combat and wacky humor that you’d expect. Yakuza 0 takes it back to where it all began, but a mildly interesting setting and story don’t quite make up for the game’s more tedious elements.

SpellForce 3

Looking at single aspects, SpellForce 3 is successful on all fronts, but this does not tell the whole story as on some level the game fails to come together cohesively. Building up RPG characters works largely well, but the RTS strategy sections leave a lot to be desired and the heroes simply melt into the background too much to be in any way meaningful. There is nothing wrong with the game; it is just never an awesome experience.

Ancestors Legacy

Nice trailers, great announcements, and the game itself is boring and repeatable. The battles last forever. Since you can’t have more than a dozen units at any time and defensive buildings can only be placed in pre-determined spots, your tactical options are extremely limited and no matter what you choose, you’ll end up playing whack-a-mole with enemy troops.

Blitzkrieg 3

Although you’re given a solid level of control over individual squads, you have little control over the game as a whole. Nothing about the game reaches out to the player and pulls them into an immersive WWII experience. Blitzkrieg 3 cannot penetrate the hearts of RTS enthusiasts.
